Yes, I have SisterLocks.
I started them in 2000.
Yes, it’s all my hair.
Now for the long version
I got my SisterLocks in August 2000. Tressie Samuels in Georgia started my locks for me and continued to maintain them for the first year and a half or so.
I had already grown out of my perm for some time and had about 6 inches of virgin hair on my head. From the moment I left my technicians salon I loved it, loved it, LOVED IT!
I will note that I was also ready for the change after the one bad hair experience that ‘broke the camels back‘ more on that later.
I had been researching sisterlocks for about 2 years before I actually got them (there was no one in Atlanta to do them when I first found out about them). I had gone thru braids, weaves, two strand twists, coils etc.etc.etc. and it was all good except for the fact that every time I would take them down my hair would shed like crazy and I found my thick natural getting thinner and thinner! <--more-->
Anyway, back to sisterlocks. They’re great. You don’t have to grow out of your perm to get them; you just need 3 inches of hair and at least a month or two of new growth.
Make sure, MAKE SURE you go to someone certified. Your hair CAN get jacked by an amateur (I personally know some horror stories from sisters who decided to go a ‘cheaper’ route only to pay twice as much in the long run for someone to try and ‘fix’ their hair).
Sisterlocks IS an investment. But a worthwhile one. I shelled out $450 5yrs 10yrs ago but don’t regret it not one cent. My hair is down my back past my bra line now. I haven’t gone to a hair dresser routinely for about 5+ yrs (imagine the savings) and the only reason I did go (the few times I went) was because I had a baby and didn’t have the time or energy to do it myself (I have taken the class on how to do maintenance for myself).
Now on to styling Sisterlocks,
you can…
Roller set,
Hot curl (after 6mo.)
Flat Iron (after 6mo.)
Twist
Braid
Crinkle
Cut
You get the picture.
As a matter of fact in my photo for the single I had washed my hair, then corn rowed it into 7 big cornrows and let it dry over night to get that crinkly curly effect. Another fav of mine is to set my hair on those styrofoam rods then leave the big spirals in place (by sliding the rods carefully out of each curl) for a ‘Shirley Temple’ do. Then a week later I’ll pick the curls apart for a big-ole Black Barbie Doll look.
Ok, so I know this is a looooooooooooooooong a– post but I really enjoy them and would recommend sisterlocks for any and every sister on the block.
Oh and one last note.
Be ready for the comments, complements and curiosity. For my first two years I was amazed at how my outlook changed about my hair personally and how soooooo many people responded to my hair positively.
Then around the 4th year people started asking me if that was all my hair.
Now a days very few even ask any more, most just assume it’s fake
Hey T
This post is off the hook!
Thanks for visiting my blog, your music and your hair are inspirational
HI Tuere,
My name is Mandisa and I must say your hair is so beautiful! I cut mine last month and its I’d say a quarter inch long now below shoulder length! I was tired of seeing it everywhere except on my head (flloor, bed, comb…!).
I would love to have sisterlocks just like yours. I live in Zimbabwe and there are no consultants in Africa so I think I will have to settle for the braidlocks route.
( I had wanted them really thin and started off professionally for a while. I must say though that the braidlocks I’ve seen are really breathtaking. Hope to have such skill!
I noticed on one of your pages you said your hair was thick, exactly how many locks do you have? Can I ask how it was starting to maintain your own hair and how long it takes you?
Its amazing that you’re a musician. I will listen to your music on my connection at home! One thing I must say I love about the lock ladies I’ve come across is their love of being who God meant them to be, love of family and nature. Its so inspiring.
I meant for this to be a short one but I usually allow my words to overflow past my intended purpose! Ha ha! You really look magnificent.
faithfully
Mandisa X. Saurombe (happily married mother of a 7 month boy) – will get a blog soon!
Thanks Mandisa!
I counted some years ago but don’t remember the exact number but its upwards of 450+, next time I shampoo, I’ll try to remember to separate and count them
I usually retighten my locks every 6 weeks or so and it take me about a week. I retighten about a large handful each day. Sisterlocks offer a retightening class for those who have had them for at least 6-9 months, so starting was easy after I took the class, and my consultant would analyze my progress every so often.
Congrats on you precious little one! I wish you much success with your hair, who knows, maybe you can take the class and be the one to offer Sisterlocks to Zimbabwe
Tuere, your Sisterlocks are just beautiful!!!
Best SL’s I have seen thus far.
thank you so much for all of the postings. I have about 10-12 inches of hair and I also have been doing the natural styles two strand twice, afro single updo puffs, etc. forget that mess, i’m getting my sisterlocks soon, but of course the length of my hair and how they measure it, is off the hook in price. once I save up all of the monies, I will be good to go. I have been all natural since 1990. Now its on, and poppin, lol, here comes my sisterlocks real soon. You are in my favorites for life, I have sent your postings to my sisters/daughters and showed them you are my inspiration. I’ve been looking at your site/the old one also for at least 2 years. Now I’m good to go. thank you ever so much, you are a living doll, and keep representing the sisterlocks, you are a winner. Ladies take notes, Tuere is the bomb for life. (smile) and happy to have met you. Peace
I have shoulder length Locs. I’m thinking of changing to SisterLocs. Has anyone planning this change contacted you? I need to know where to start. Thanks
I asked my consultant about it years ago, and basically to enjoy the full benefits if thinner more easily styled SisterLocks, you would actually have to start pretty much from scratch.
I’ve also heard of some women opting to have their traditional locks professionally removed (this involves quite a bit of shedding but probably not as dramatic as just whacking a whole head of hair off of your head), and then starting from there.
I hope this helps Wendy!
(sorry for the delay, we’ve been moving)
Your sisterlocks are beautiful! I got my sisterlocks installed almost a year ago and they are the best thing I have ever done for my hair. I don’t get too many comments yet, but I feel like I am no longer a slave to my hair. I don’t have to live in fear of it getting wet or losing my hairstyle. I can’t wait until they are as long as yours. Keep being an inspiration to sisters everywhere!
OMG, (OH MY GOODNESS) I DID IT ON PRESIDENT’S DAY, I HAVE MY SISTERLOCKS….. YEAH!!!!! THEY WERE DONE BY CELESTE, JOANNE CORNWELL’S SISTER, HERE IN ANN ARBOR MICHIGAN. IT WAS FOUR LONG DAYS, BUT I’M DONE, AND SOOOO HAPPY. LADIES, STOP THINKING ABOUT IT AND GO FOR IT, YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID. PEACE, EDNA DENISE
I am considering getting Sisterlocks and the price is sooooooooo expensive. I have been natural for over 8 years wearing the two strand twist. My hair is long and it takes me up to 5 hours or more every two weeks. So far, all the certified stylist I’ve talked with, tells me it will cost from $500.oo – $1,000.00. I do not understand why it’s so expensive when it is my natural hair. Could somebody help me understand?
I am 17 years old and a junior in highschool. I live right outside of atlanta and i am seriously considering getting sisterlocks. I’ve done very extensive research on the locks and came accross one of your pictures on bing.com. I emediatly fell in love with your hair. As a teenage artist in a world of smalltown african americans(too high and mighty to be “black”), i do not fit in. At the age of 18 months old my mother and aunt took me to get a relaxer. I always hated it. I had no choice in the matter. For the last 2 or 3 years i’ve been struggling with trying to grow out my relaxer. 5 or 6 months go by and my hair is un-managable. It’s extreamly thick and curly. So as a result i am forced to relax it. When i found out about sisterlocks i knew that this was the answer to all my hair problems. I was so excited and showed my mother all of my findings. She said no without question, not bothering to even look at the website. Im extreamly discuraged by this. Can anyone give me any information, websites, or testimonials that might help me to convince her that this is a better solution than geting my hair relaxed every 4 weeks?
